How to Use Dried Vanilla Beans?

Published in Vanilla Beans 4 mins read

Dried vanilla beans, while not as plump as fresh ones, still pack a flavorful punch and can be used in several creative ways. Here's how to get the most out of them:

Rehydrating Dried Vanilla Beans

If your dried vanilla beans are brittle, rehydrating them can make them easier to work with, especially for scraping the seeds.

  1. Soak in Warm Liquid: Submerge the bean in warm milk, cream, water, or even alcohol (like rum or vodka) for 15-30 minutes. This will soften the bean. Remember, the liquid will also be infused with vanilla flavor!
  2. Pat Dry: Gently pat the rehydrated bean dry before using.

Vanilla Bean Powder

Transforming your dried beans into powder is an excellent way to utilize the entire bean and add a concentrated vanilla flavor to your recipes.

  1. Grind the Beans: Use a spice grinder, coffee grinder, or a high-powered blender to grind the dried vanilla beans into a fine powder. Make sure the beans are completely dry for optimal grinding.
  2. Storage: Store the vanilla bean powder in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
  3. Usage: Use the powder in baking, desserts, smoothies, or anywhere you want a burst of vanilla flavor. Start with a small amount (⅛-¼ teaspoon) as it's quite potent.

Vanilla Simple Syrup

Infuse your simple syrup with the rich flavor of vanilla.

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a saucepan, combine equal parts water and sugar (e.g., 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar) along with your dried vanilla bean.
  2. Simmer: Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Infuse: Remove from heat and let the vanilla bean steep in the syrup for at least 30 minutes, or even longer for a stronger flavor.
  4. Strain (Optional): Remove the vanilla bean (you can rinse and reuse it for extract, see below).
  5. Storage: Store the vanilla simple syrup in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Vanilla Sugar

A fragrant addition to your baking pantry!

  1. Process with Sugar: Place the dried vanilla bean in a food processor or blender with granulated or caster sugar.
  2. Grind Together: Pulse or blend until the vanilla bean is finely ground and evenly distributed throughout the sugar.
  3. Storage: Store the vanilla sugar in an airtight container. The sugar will become increasingly fragrant over time.

Vanilla Extract

Even dried vanilla beans can be used to make extract.

  1. Prepare the Beans: Slit the vanilla bean lengthwise to expose the seeds.
  2. Combine with Alcohol: Place the vanilla bean in a clean glass jar and cover it with a high-proof alcohol, such as vodka, rum, or bourbon. A general ratio is 6-8 vanilla beans per 8 ounces of alcohol.
  3. Steep: Seal the jar tightly and store it in a dark, cool place for at least 6-8 weeks, shaking it occasionally. The longer it steeps, the stronger the flavor will be.

Infusing Coffee

Add a touch of vanilla to your morning brew.

  1. Grind with Coffee Beans: Grind a small piece of dried vanilla bean along with your coffee beans before brewing. Start with a very small piece as vanilla bean flavor is concentrated.

By using these methods, you can ensure that no part of your precious vanilla beans goes to waste, even when they are dried.
