How Do I Group Objects Together in Vectorworks?

Published in Vectorworks object management 3 mins read

To group objects together in Vectorworks, you simply select the desired items and then use the Group command. This is a fundamental process for managing and organizing your drawing elements.

Simple Steps to Group Objects

Grouping in Vectorworks allows you to combine multiple drawing objects into a single selectable entity. This makes it easier to move, copy, delete, or apply changes to them all at once, maintaining their relative positions.

Based on the provided reference, here are the exact steps to group objects:

  1. Select the objects (or groups) to be grouped. Use your selection tool to click on the objects you want to combine. You can click and drag a marquee around multiple objects or hold down the Shift key while clicking on individual items to add them to your selection. You can even group existing groups together.
  2. Select Modify > Group. Go to the main menu bar, click on the Modify menu, and then choose the Group command from the dropdown list.

Once these steps are completed, the selected objects will become a single group object. When you click on any part of the group, the entire group will be selected.

Why Use Grouping?

Grouping objects offers several advantages in your Vectorworks workflow:

  • Simplifies Selection: Select complex assemblies with a single click.
  • Easy Manipulation: Move, rotate, scale, or duplicate multiple items simultaneously without affecting their arrangement relative to each other.
  • Organization: Keep related drawing elements together, improving clarity and manageability, especially in large or complex drawings.
  • Prevent Accidental Edits: Reduces the chance of accidentally moving or modifying individual parts of an assembly.

Managing Groups

After creating a group, you might need to edit its contents or break it apart.

  • Editing a Group: Double-click on a group to enter "Edit Group" mode. This allows you to modify the individual objects within the group. Other objects in the drawing will be dimmed or hidden while you are in this mode. Double-click outside the group's editing boundary or click the "Exit Group" button (usually located in the top right of the drawing window) to return to the main drawing.
  • Ungrouping Objects: To break a group back into its individual components, select the group and then choose Modify > Ungroup.

By using the grouping function effectively, you can significantly streamline your drawing process and keep your Vectorworks files well-organized and easy to manage.
