The Core Function of an Ignition Coil
Simply put, your car's battery provides a relatively low voltage (typically 12 volts). This low voltage isn't nearly enough to create the spark needed to ignite the fuel mixture in the engine cylinders.
This is where the ignition coil comes in. The purpose of an ignition coil is to convert the low current from a car battery into enough power to ignite the fuel and start the engine. It acts as a voltage step-up transformer.
How it Works (Simplified)
Inside the ignition coil, there are two coils of wire wrapped around an iron core:
- Primary Coil: This receives the low voltage from the battery.
- Secondary Coil: This has significantly more turns of wire than the primary coil.
When the low voltage current flows through the primary coil and is suddenly interrupted by the engine control module (ECM) or ignition system components, it creates a rapidly changing magnetic field. This changing magnetic field then induces a much higher voltage in the secondary coil – often tens of thousands of volts.
Why High Voltage is Necessary
This extremely high voltage generated by the ignition coil is sent to the spark plug. At the spark plug's gap, the voltage becomes high enough to jump across, creating a powerful electrical spark. This spark ignites the compressed fuel-air mixture inside the combustion chamber, causing a controlled explosion that pushes the piston down, ultimately turning the crankshaft and powering the vehicle.
Without a functioning ignition coil to generate this high voltage, the spark plugs wouldn't be able to fire, and the engine could not start or run properly.
