At its core, a rack and pinion steering system consists of a pinion (a circular gear) with a rack (a linear gear). This mechanism is ingenious because the system works by converting a revolving motion into linear motion. When the steering wheel is turned, it rotates the pinion gear. This rotating pinion gear engages with the teeth on the linear rack gear, causing the rack to move from side to side. This linear movement of the rack is then transmitted to the steering arms, which in turn pivot the front wheels, allowing the vehicle to change direction.
