How do you add multiple markers in Premiere Pro?

Published in Video Editing Workflow 3 mins read

While Premiere Pro doesn't have a built-in function to add timeline markers to multiple points at once or different markers to various clips automatically, a common workaround allows you to add the same marker or series of markers to multiple clips simultaneously.

Based on user experience, an effective method involves linking the clips you want to mark together temporarily. This treats them as a single unit for certain operations, including adding clip markers.

Adding Markers to Multiple Clips Simultaneously

A widely used technique for adding markers to several clips at once involves temporarily linking the desired clips. This leverages the linking feature to apply the marker action across the selected clips.

Here's the workaround described by users:

  1. Select the clips: In your timeline, select all the clips you want to add markers to. You can do this by dragging a marquee selection around them or by holding down the Shift key and clicking on each clip.
  2. Link the clips: With the clips selected, navigate to the Clip dropdown menu and choose Link. Alternatively, right-click on one of the selected clips and choose Link. This action links the selected clips together.
  3. Add the marker: Now, with the linked clips selected, add your marker. You can typically do this by pressing the M key on your keyboard. This will add a clip marker to the current playhead position within the selected clips, and critically, this marker will appear on all the linked clips simultaneously.
  4. Add more markers (Optional): Move the playhead and press M again to add additional markers to all linked clips at different points.
  5. Unlink the clips: Once you have added the desired markers to all the clips, it's important to unlink them so you can edit them individually again. Select the linked group, right-click, and choose Unlink, or go to the Clip menu and select Unlink.

This method adds clip markers to the individual clips. It does not add timeline markers.

Summary of Steps

Step Action Detail
1. Select Select desired clips in the timeline. Use marquee tool or Shift+click.
2. Link Go to Clip > Link or right-click & choose Link. Temporarily groups the selected clips.
3. Add Marker Press the M key or use the Marker menu while clips are selected. Adds a clip marker to all linked clips.
4. Unlink Go to Clip > Unlink or right-click & choose Unlink. Separates clips for individual editing.

This workaround is particularly useful when you need to place identical or similar markers (like beat markers or important synchronization points) on a batch of clips efficiently. Remember that these are clip markers, which are attached to the individual media files within the clips, not timeline markers, which are fixed positions on the sequence timeline itself.
