How do I add a solid color adjustment layer in Premiere Pro?

Published in Video Editing 2 mins read

Adding a solid color adjustment layer in Premiere Pro is straightforward, allowing you to easily apply a uniform color over your video. Here's how:

  1. Navigate to the New Item Button: In the Project Panel, click on the "New Item" button at the bottom (it looks like a folded page). If you do not see it, make sure the project panel is displayed. Go to Window -> Project.
  2. Select "Color Matte": From the dropdown menu that appears, select "Color Matte."
  3. Choose your Color: The Color Picker window will open. Select the desired color for your solid color layer. You can choose a color from the visual spectrum or enter specific RGB or Hex values.
  4. Confirm Settings: A window may appear asking you to confirm the dimensions of the color matte. Typically, it will match your sequence settings, so just click "OK".
  5. Name and Save: Give your color matte a descriptive name (e.g., "Solid Red") and click "OK" to save it to your Project panel.
  6. Drag to Timeline: Drag the newly created color matte from your Project panel onto a video track in your Timeline panel, above the footage you want to affect.
  7. Adjust Duration and Position: Adjust the duration and position of the color matte layer in the timeline to control when and for how long the solid color is visible.
  8. Adjust the opacity and blending mode: If the solid layer is covering the entire screen, you will need to adjust the opacity to show the footage beneath it. You can also experiment with different blending modes for some unique effects. Select the layer in the timeline, then go to "Effect Controls." Here you can adjust the opacity and blending mode.

This solid color layer acts as any other video clip, and you can apply effects, transitions, and adjustments to it as needed. It's a versatile tool for creating graphic elements, adding color washes, and generating interesting visual effects within Premiere Pro.
