How do I change frame orientation in Premiere Pro?

Published in Video Editing 2 mins read

To change the frame orientation of a clip in Adobe Premiere Pro, you'll use the Rotation control within the Effect Controls panel. Here's how:

  1. Select the clip: In your timeline, click on the clip you want to rotate.
  2. Open Effect Controls: Go to the "Window" menu and select "Effect Controls". This panel is typically located at the top left of your workspace.
  3. Locate the Rotation Property: In the Effect Controls panel, under the "Motion" section, you will find the "Rotation" property.
  4. Adjust the Rotation: You have a couple of options for changing the rotation:
    • Directly Enter a Value: Click on the numerical value next to "Rotation" and type in the desired angle in degrees (e.g., 90 for a 90-degree rotation).
    • Use the Scrubbable Control: Click and drag on the numerical value. Dragging to the right will increase the rotation, and dragging to the left will decrease it. You can rotate the clip freely using this method.

For example, entering 90 will rotate your clip 90 degrees clockwise, changing a landscape clip to portrait, or a portrait clip to landscape. Setting it to 180 will flip the video upside down.

Keep in mind that rotating a video can cause black bars to appear on the edges of the frame, especially if you're significantly changing the aspect ratio. You may need to adjust the scale and position of the clip in the Effect Controls panel to compensate and fill the frame.
