How do I overlay text on an image in Premiere Pro?

Published in Video Editing 2 mins read

To overlay text on an image in Adobe Premiere Pro, you'll primarily use the Essential Graphics panel. Here's how:

  1. Import your image: Drag your image into the Premiere Pro project panel and then onto the timeline.

  2. Create a Text Layer: Go to the "Graphics" workspace (Window > Workspaces > Graphics) or select the Type Tool (T) from the toolbar. Click directly on the Program Monitor (the video preview window) where you want your text to appear and type your desired text. This will automatically create a new graphics clip on the timeline above your image.

  3. Adjust Text Properties: In the Essential Graphics panel (Window > Essential Graphics), you can adjust various text properties like:

    • Font: Choose your desired font.
    • Font Size: Adjust the size of the text.
    • Fill: Change the color of the text.
    • Stroke: Add an outline to the text and control its color and width.
    • Shadow: Add a shadow to the text and control its properties like opacity, angle, distance, and blur.
    • Position and Scale: Adjust the position and size of the text box directly in the Program Monitor, or use the Transform controls in the Essential Graphics panel for more precise adjustments.
    • Alignment: Align the text within its bounding box (left, center, right).
  4. Adjust Text Duration: On the timeline, drag the edges of the graphics clip (the text layer) to adjust how long the text appears over the image.

  5. Adding Effects (Optional): You can add effects to your text for more visual interest. In the Effects panel (Window > Effects), search for effects like "Gaussian Blur," "Glow," or "Drop Shadow" and drag them onto your graphics clip. Adjust the effect parameters in the Effect Controls panel (Window > Effect Controls).

By using the Essential Graphics panel and experimenting with different settings, you can easily overlay and customize text on images in Premiere Pro.
