How to Crop a Video in OpenShot?

Published in Video Editing 2 mins read

Cropping a video in OpenShot involves using the transform tool to adjust the video's visible area. Here's a breakdown of the process:

  1. Add Your Video Clips: Import your main video to a track (e.g., track 1). If you're layering a video to be cropped on top, add that video to a higher track (e.g., track 2). The video you want to crop should be on a track above the video you want it to be cropped over.

  2. Select the Clip: Click on the video clip you want to crop in the timeline.

  3. Access the Transform Tool: Right-click on the clip and select "Transform." This will display handles around the video in the preview window.

  4. Adjust the Crop: Drag the handles on the corners or sides of the video in the preview window to crop it. Dragging inwards from the edges will reduce the visible area of the video, effectively cropping it.

  5. Fine-Tune (Optional): You can also adjust the X (horizontal) and Y (vertical) coordinates, Width, and Height values in the Properties panel (usually located on the left side of the OpenShot window) for precise cropping adjustments.

  6. Preview: Play the timeline to preview the cropped video and make further adjustments as needed.

In essence, the "Transform" tool allows you to dynamically resize and reposition your video clip, giving the effect of cropping. It's important to understand that this method doesn't permanently remove parts of the video file; it simply adjusts the visible area within the OpenShot project.
