How to Invert a Shape Mask in Final Cut Pro

Inverting a shape mask in Final Cut Pro is straightforward. This process reverses the masked and unmasked areas of your video, effectively revealing what was previously hidden and obscuring what was visible.

To invert a mask applied to an effect:

  1. Open the Video Inspector: Select your clip in the timeline. The Video inspector will appear (or press Command-4).
  2. Locate the Effect: Find the effect to which you've applied the mask in the Effects section of the inspector.
  3. Apply Effect Masks: Hover your cursor over the effect name. Click the "Apply Effect Masks" button.
  4. Choose "Invert Masks": From the menu that appears, select "Invert Masks". This will immediately reverse your mask.

This method, as confirmed by Apple Support (https://support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/invert-effect-masks-verc9de7a2f8/mac), works for any effect with a mask applied.

Inverting Shape Masks Directly

Some users have noted an "Invert Mask" checkbox within the Mask tab of the inspector (https://creativecow.net/forums/thread/invert-masks/). This option offers a direct way to invert a shape mask, providing an alternative method to the above. The exact location of this checkbox may vary based on your Final Cut Pro version and the type of mask used.

Remember that inverting a mask is a simple yet powerful tool. It allows for quick adjustments to your masking workflow, saving you time and effort.
