How do you adjust shapes in Visio?

Published in Visio Shape Editing 2 mins read

Adjusting shapes in Visio primarily involves selecting the shape and then using the selection handles to change its size.

Basic Steps for Adjusting Shapes

To modify the dimensions of a shape you've added to your Visio drawing, follow these simple steps:

  1. Select the Shape:

    • Using the pointer tool, click on the shape you wish to adjust.
    • Once selected, the shape will be surrounded by a dotted line and display small squares (called selection handles) around its perimeter and sometimes in the center.
  2. Resize the Shape:

    • To adjust the length or width of the shape, hold the mouse pointer over one of the selection handles located on the sides or corners of the shape.
    • Watch as the mouse pointer changes shape. When hovering over a handle, it will typically transform into a two-headed arrow. This indicates that you can now resize the shape in the direction the arrows are pointing.
    • Click and drag the handle to make the shape larger or smaller until it reaches the appropriate size you need.
    • Dragging a side handle adjusts only that dimension (width or height), while dragging a corner handle adjusts both dimensions simultaneously, allowing you to maintain the shape's aspect ratio (if you hold down the Shift key while dragging).

By following these steps, you can easily modify the size of shapes in your Visio diagrams to fit your design requirements.
