How to Use Primer Paint on a Wall

Published in Wall Painting Primer Application 3 mins read

Applying primer correctly is a crucial step before painting to ensure proper adhesion and a smooth finish.

Key Steps for Applying Primer

Using primer paint on a wall involves several steps, from preparing the surface to applying the primer itself.

1. Surface Preparation

Before you even open the primer can, make sure your walls are ready.

  • Clean: Remove any dust, dirt, or grease. A damp cloth or a mild cleaning solution can work.
  • Repair: Patch any holes or cracks with spackling compound and let it dry. Sand the patched areas smooth so they are flush with the wall surface.
  • Mask: Use painter's tape to protect baseboards, trim, window frames, and the ceiling line. Cover floors with drop cloths.

2. Cutting In

This step involves using a brush to apply primer along edges and in corners where a roller cannot easily reach.

  • Choose the right brush: A two-inch angled brush is commonly used for this task. The angled bristles help create clean lines.
  • Apply in key areas: Use the angled brush to apply primer in all corners or places where walls, molding, and ceilings meet. Dip the brush about a third of the way into the primer, tap off excess, and apply with smooth strokes along the edges.
  • Work in sections: Cut in one wall or section at a time before rolling the main area.

3. Rolling the Main Areas

Once the edges are done, use a roller to cover the large, flat surfaces of the wall.

  • Choose the right roller cover: Select a nap size appropriate for your wall's texture (shorter nap for smooth walls, longer nap for textured walls).
  • Load the roller: Pour primer into a paint tray. Dip the roller into the tray, ensuring it's evenly coated but not dripping. Use the tray's ridged section to roll off excess.
  • Apply to the wall: Apply primer in a W or M pattern, filling in the shape without lifting the roller. Then, lightly roll vertically over the area to smooth it out. Work from wet edge to wet edge to avoid lap marks.
  • Maintain a wet edge: Continue rolling sections of the wall, always working back into the previously applied, still-wet primer.

4. Drying Time

  • Check the can: Always refer to the primer can for recommended drying times between coats and before applying your finish paint. Drying times can vary based on humidity and temperature.

By following these steps, including using an angled brush for edges as recommended, you can effectively apply primer to your walls.
