How Do You Tissue Paper a Wall?

Published in Wall Texture Technique 1 min read

Tissue papering a wall is a decorative painting technique that adds texture and visual interest. Here's how you do it:

  1. Prepare the Wall: Ensure the wall is clean and primed.
  2. Apply Base Coat: Apply your chosen base coat paint color to the wall. It needs to be wet for the next step.
  3. Apply Tissue Paper: "Place a sheet of tissue paper onto the wet wall and gently smooth it in random directions using your hands or a soft brush" (diagram 1B). Creases are desirable.
  4. Roll Over with Base Coat: Immediately roll over the tissue paper with your base coat color to completely encase it in paint. The wet paint adheres the tissue to the wall. The creases and folds in the tissue paper will create a textured effect.

This creates a textured, aged look that can be further enhanced with glazes or other decorative finishes.
