What is Wall Size?

Published in Wallpaper Preparation 2 mins read

Wall size, also known as sizing, is a method to prepare walls for wallpaper that predates modern primers. It is not about measuring the dimensions of a wall. Most commonly, wall size is diluted wallpaper adhesive applied to the wall before installations.

Understanding Wall Sizing

Before the advent of modern wall primers designed specifically for wallpaper application, sizing was the standard technique for preparing a wall. Its primary purpose is to create a suitable surface for wallpaper adhesion.

Key Aspects of Wall Size

  • Purpose: To prepare walls for wallpaper hanging.
  • Function: Creates a consistent, slightly tacky surface that helps the wallpaper adhere properly. It also helps seal the wall, preventing the paste from soaking in too quickly, which allows for easier positioning of the wallpaper.
  • Composition: Typically consists of diluted wallpaper adhesive. Other materials like protein-based glues were used historically, but diluted adhesive is the most common form today.
  • Application: Applied directly to the clean, dry wall surface before the wallpaper is hung.

Why Use Wall Size?

Using wall size offers several benefits for wallpaper installation:

  • Improved Adhesion: Provides a better grip for the wallpaper paste.
  • Easier Positioning: Prevents the paste from absorbing too quickly into the wall, allowing you to slide and adjust the wallpaper before it sets.
  • Simplified Removal: Can make future wallpaper removal easier by creating a layer between the wall surface and the wallpaper adhesive.
  • Sealing: Helps to seal porous surfaces, ensuring a more uniform bond.

While modern primers often incorporate sizing properties, traditional wall size (diluted adhesive) is still used by some professionals, especially when working with specific types of wallpaper or wall surfaces.
