How to Remove Painted Wallpaper from the Wall

Published in Wallpaper Removal Prep 2 mins read

Removing painted wallpaper from a wall typically begins with preparing the surface to allow removal solutions to work effectively. This preparation involves a process called scoring the wallpaper.

Preparing the Surface: Scoring Painted Wallpaper

Scoring painted wallpaper creates small perforations that allow liquid strippers or steam to penetrate the impermeable painted layer and reach the adhesive underneath. This is a crucial first step before attempting to peel or scrape the wallpaper.

Here is how to effectively score the painted wallpaper:

  • Use a wallpaper scoring tool: Obtain a specialized scoring tool designed for this purpose. These tools typically have small, sharp wheels that rotate as you roll them over the surface.
  • Roll over the entire area: Systematically roll the scoring tool over the entire painted wallpapered area you intend to remove.
  • Apply gentle pressure: As you roll the tool, apply gentle, even pressure. The goal is to create tiny holes or perforations, not to gouge the wall.
  • Be careful not to puncture the wall: It's essential to control the pressure to avoid damaging the underlying drywall or plaster. Excessive pressure can create deep cuts that will require repair later.
  • Pay extra attention to corners and edges: These areas often have thicker layers of paint or adhesive and may be more firmly adhered. Ensure you score these areas thoroughly to allow the removal agent to penetrate completely.

Why Scoring is Important:

Painted surfaces, especially those with gloss or semi-gloss paint, are water-resistant. Simply applying a wallpaper stripper or steam will not work well because the liquid or steam cannot reach the adhesive through the paint layer. Scoring breaks this barrier, allowing the removal agent to dissolve the adhesive, making the wallpaper much easier to lift and scrape off.
