Removing and Cleaning Your Washing Machine Dispenser

Published in Washing Machine Maintenance 4 mins read

To get soap out of a washing machine dispenser, you typically need to remove the dispenser drawer itself for thorough cleaning.

Here's how to do it:

Over time, soap residue, fabric softener build-up, and mold can accumulate in your washing machine's detergent dispenser drawer. Cleaning this regularly is essential for hygiene and optimal machine performance. The primary way to tackle this is by taking the drawer out.

Step 1: Remove the Dispenser Drawer

The process for removing the dispenser drawer is often straightforward and involves similar steps across many washing machine models:

  • Locate the Dispenser: Find the detergent and fabric softener dispenser drawer on the front of your washing machine, usually near the top.
  • Slide it Out: As demonstrated in the reference, you can typically just simply slide out the drawer like this. Pull it forward smoothly until it stops.
  • Find the Release Lever: Most drawers are held in place by a catch or lever. They typically have some sort of lever that you press down to release the drawer. This lever is often located in the middle or on one side of the compartment, sometimes marked or noticeable upon inspection.
  • Press and Pull: While pressing down on the release lever, gently pull the drawer forward. It should now detach completely from the machine.

Example Lever Location:

  • Some machines have a lever inside the main compartment, visible when the drawer is pulled partway out.
  • Others have a lever on the underside or top of the drawer itself.

Step 2: Clean the Dispenser Drawer

Once the drawer is removed, you can easily clean out the soap residue:

  1. Rinse: Take the drawer to a sink and rinse off as much residue as possible under warm or hot running water.
  2. Scrub: Use an old toothbrush, a small brush, or a cloth to scrub away stubborn soap scum and build-up from all compartments, corners, and crevices. A sponge or cloth works well for larger surfaces.
  3. Soak (if needed): For heavy build-up, you can soak the drawer in hot water mixed with a mild detergent, white vinegar, or a specialized washing machine cleaner for 15-30 minutes before scrubbing.
  4. Clean Inserts/Separators: Some drawers have removable inserts or separators for different types of detergent (liquid/powder) or fabric softener. Remove these if possible and clean them separately.
  5. Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse the entire drawer again to remove all cleaning solution and loosened debris.

Step 3: Clean the Drawer Compartment

Don't forget the area where the drawer sits inside the washing machine:

  • Use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe inside the drawer compartment, removing any residual soap or mold that may have collected there.
  • Check the roof of the compartment where water flows in – this area can also accumulate residue.

Step 4: Reassemble and Replace

Ensure all parts of the drawer are clean and dry. Reinsert any removable inserts.

  • To put it back in, just slide the drawer back into its slot in the washing machine until it clicks or locks into place.

Regular cleaning prevents large soap blockages and keeps your machine running smoothly. A quick rinse after a few washes or a more thorough cleaning every month or two can make a big difference.
