How to Remove a Drum Seal from a Washing Machine?

Published in Washing Machine Repair 3 mins read

Removing a washing machine drum seal typically involves detaching the clamp that secures it to the front panel, then peeling the seal away from the drum or tub.

Here's how to remove a washing machine drum seal, incorporating the detail about screw clamps:

The process for removing a washing machine drum seal (also known as a door boot or gasket) involves detaching it from the machine's front panel and the drum itself. The method can vary slightly depending on the type of clamp used to hold the seal in place.

Step-by-Step Removal Process

Follow these steps carefully to remove the seal:

  1. Open the Washing Machine Door: Fully open the door to access the drum seal.
  2. Locate the Outer Clamp: Look around the outside edge of the drum seal where it meets the washing machine's front panel. You will find a clamp securing the seal in place. This clamp can be either a spring-loaded wire clamp or a clamp secured with a screw.
  3. Remove the Outer Clamp:
    • If your model has a screw clamp: The reference states, "Note some models may have a screw clamp instead of a spring clamp. And in this case just loosen the screw on the clamp. And remove the clamp". Use a screwdriver to loosen the screw on the clamp until it's loose enough to remove the entire clamp ring.
    • If your model has a spring clamp: You'll usually find a spring mechanism you need to unhook or stretch to release the tension and remove the wire clamp. This often requires pliers or a special tool.
  4. Peel Back the Seal: Once the outer clamp is removed, you can gently pull the outer edge of the seal away from the front panel opening.
  5. Locate and Remove the Inner Clamp (if present): The seal is also attached to the washing machine drum or tub. There is often another clamp securing the inner edge of the seal to the drum or tub flange. This inner clamp can also be a spring clamp or a screw clamp.
  6. Remove the Inner Clamp:
    • Access this inner clamp by reaching behind or inside the peeled-back seal.
    • Remove the inner clamp using the appropriate method (loosening the screw for a screw clamp or releasing the spring for a spring clamp).
  7. Gently Remove the Seal: With both clamps removed, you can now gently pull the entire drum seal away from the drum and the machine, detaching it completely.

Remember to work carefully to avoid damaging the machine or the seal (if you plan to reuse it).
