Non-biodegradable waste refers to materials that cannot be broken down naturally by microorganisms over time. Common examples include plastics, glass, metals, and certain chemicals. Unlike organic waste, these materials persist in the environment for hundreds or even thousands of years if not managed properly.

Key Management Strategies for Non-Biodegradable Waste

Effective management of non-biodegradable waste follows a hierarchy of strategies, focusing first on prevention and reduction, followed by reuse, recycling, and finally, safe disposal or recovery.

1. Reduce

The most effective way to manage non-biodegradable waste is to prevent its creation in the first place.

However, landfilling consumes land, and the waste persists for a very long time.

Some non-biodegradable waste, particularly certain plastics, can be incinerated under controlled conditions to generate energy (Waste-to-Energy). This process reduces the volume of waste significantly and produces electricity or heat, although it requires strict emission controls.
