How to Set the Crown on a Watch?

Published in Watch Maintenance 4 mins read

Setting the crown on a watch depends on the watch's features (time-only, date, day-date, etc.) and the type of crown (screw-down or push-pull). Here's a general guide:

Understanding the Crown Positions

Most watches have a crown with multiple positions, often revealed when you pull it out:

  • Position 0 (Pushed In): This is the normal running position where the watch is operating. For screw-down crowns, this is also the position where the crown is screwed down to maintain water resistance.
  • Position 1 (First Pull): Typically used for quick-set date or day-date functions.
  • Position 2 (Second Pull): Usually for setting the time. This position disengages the watch movement from the running position.

General Steps for Setting the Time and Date (if applicable):

  1. Unscrew the Crown (if applicable): If your watch has a screw-down crown, gently unscrew it by turning it counter-clockwise until it releases. Do not force it.
  2. Pull the Crown to the Correct Position:
    • To set the date (if your watch has a date function): Gently pull the crown out to the first position (Position 1). Turn the crown clockwise or counter-clockwise to advance the date until it shows the correct date.
    • To set the day (if your watch has a day-date function): In the first position (Position 1), turning the crown in the opposite direction from setting the date will usually adjust the day of the week.
    • To set the time: Pull the crown out to the second position (Position 2). This stops the seconds hand (hacking). Turn the crown clockwise or counter-clockwise until the hands show the correct time.
  3. Synchronize the Seconds Hand (Optional): If your watch has a seconds hand and you want to synchronize it precisely, wait until the desired second on a reference clock (e.g., online atomic clock) approaches. When the second hand reaches the zero mark, push the crown back in (Position 0).
  4. Push the Crown Back In: Once the time and date (if applicable) are set, push the crown all the way back in to its original position (Position 0).
  5. Screw Down the Crown (if applicable): If your watch has a screw-down crown, gently push the crown in and turn it clockwise until it is securely tightened. Do not over-tighten.

Important Considerations:

  • Avoid changing the date between 9 PM and 3 AM: Many watches have delicate date-changing mechanisms that are engaged during these hours. Forcing a date change during this period can damage the movement. If you accidentally start to set the date during this time, advance the hands to a time outside this period before proceeding.
  • Be Gentle: Avoid using excessive force when pulling, turning, or pushing the crown.
  • Water Resistance: If your watch is water-resistant, ensure the crown is fully pushed in and screwed down (if applicable) before exposing it to water.
  • Refer to the Watch's Manual: The specific instructions for setting the crown may vary depending on the watch model. Always refer to the watch's manual for detailed information.

Example:

Imagine you have a watch with both a date and time setting.

  1. Unscrew the crown (if it screws down).
  2. Pull the crown to the first position. Rotate the crown to adjust the date to the correct day.
  3. Pull the crown to the second position. Rotate the crown to set the correct time.
  4. Push the crown back in.
  5. Screw the crown down (if applicable).
