To start a Rolex automatic watch that has stopped, you need to manually wind the movement using the crown.
An automatic Rolex watch is powered by the motion of the wearer's wrist, but if the watch hasn't been worn for a period exceeding its power reserve, it will stop. Manual winding is required to initiate power flow again.
Here's how to manually wind and start your Rolex:
Steps to Wind and Start Your Rolex Automatic Watch
Follow these steps carefully to wind your Rolex and get it running:
- Unscrew the Crown (if applicable): If your Rolex has a Twinlock or Triplock screw-down crown (common on Oyster models), you will first need to unscrew it counter-clockwise until it springs free from the case. If your watch does not have a screw-down crown, you can skip this step.
- Enter the Winding Position: Once the crown is free (either unscrewed or if it wasn't a screw-down type), it is in the correct position for winding. As noted in the reference, "This is the position that you're going to wind it in just like on a watch without a screw down crown." This is typically referred to as position 1.
- Wind the Watch: Rotate the crown clockwise. According to the reference, you should "rotate it clockwise. Or towards the 12 o'clock. Location." You will hear and feel a slight clicking sound as the mainspring is being tensioned.
- Number of Turns: Give the crown approximately 20-30 full turns clockwise. This is usually sufficient to build up a good power reserve and ensure the watch runs accurately once started. Winding more than this will not overwind the watch, as modern Rolex movements have a slipping mainspring bridle that prevents overwinding.
- Start the Watch: After winding, the second hand should begin to move.
- Set the Time (if needed): Pull the crown out to position 2 (or position 3 if it has a date function) to set the time.
- Secure the Crown: Push the crown back in firmly against the case. If it's a screw-down crown, screw it back down clockwise snugly against the case to ensure water resistance. Do not overtighten.
Once started and set, wearing the watch regularly will keep the automatic movement powered.
