How Centrifugal Pumps Work in Water Cooling

In a water cooling system, a centrifugal pump circulates coolant (usually water or a water-based solution) through a closed loop. The pump draws coolant from a reservoir and pushes it through a water block (mounted on the CPU, GPU, or other heat-generating component). The water absorbs heat from the component. The heated coolant then flows to a radiator, where the heat is dissipated into the air (often with the aid of fans). Finally, the cooled coolant returns to the reservoir, and the cycle repeats.

Other Pump Types (Less Common)

While centrifugal pumps dominate water cooling systems, other pump types are occasionally used, though less frequently:

  • Diaphragm pumps: These can handle a wider range of fluids but are often larger and more expensive than centrifugal pumps.
  • Peristaltic pumps: These are very gentle on the fluid and don't require seals, but they are typically bulkier and more expensive.

Due to the efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of centrifugal pumps when handling water, they are the standard choice for most water cooling applications.
