How do you change a filter cartridge?

Published in Water Filtration 3 mins read

Changing a filter cartridge is a straightforward process to maintain clean water, typically involving a few simple steps.

Here's a breakdown of how to change a filter cartridge:

  1. Determine the correct replacement cartridge: Identify the type and size of the existing filter cartridge. Refer to the filter housing or the appliance manual for this information. This ensures compatibility and optimal filtration.

  2. Turn off the water supply: Locate the water shut-off valve upstream from the filter housing. Turn it clockwise to completely shut off the water supply to prevent leaks and spills during the cartridge replacement.

  3. Release the pressure: Many filter housings have a pressure release button or valve. Open it to relieve any built-up pressure inside the housing. If there's no pressure release, carefully loosen the housing slightly to allow pressure to escape, using a filter wrench if necessary.

  4. Remove the filter housing: Use a filter wrench (if needed) to unscrew the filter housing from the filter head. Turn it counterclockwise. Be prepared for some water spillage.

  5. Remove the old cartridge: Once the housing is open, carefully remove the old filter cartridge. Note its orientation for installing the new cartridge correctly.

  6. Clean the filter housing: Wash the inside of the filter housing with mild soap and water. Rinse thoroughly to remove any debris or sediment. This helps prevent contamination of the new filter cartridge. You can also add a small amount of bleach to the water to sanitize the housing, but ensure you rinse it very well afterwards.

  7. Lubricate the O-ring (if applicable): Inspect the O-ring on the filter housing. If it appears dry or damaged, replace it. If it's in good condition, lubricate it with a food-grade silicone lubricant to ensure a proper seal.

  8. Install the new cartridge: Insert the new filter cartridge into the housing, matching the orientation of the old cartridge. Ensure it's properly seated.

  9. Reattach the filter housing: Screw the filter housing back onto the filter head, turning it clockwise. Tighten it securely by hand. Use the filter wrench to tighten it a bit further, but avoid over-tightening, which could damage the housing.

  10. Turn on the water supply: Slowly turn the water shut-off valve counterclockwise to restore the water supply.

  11. Check for leaks: Carefully inspect the filter housing and connections for any leaks. If leaks are present, tighten the housing further or check the O-ring for proper seating.

  12. Flush the system: Allow the water to run for several minutes to flush out any air or loose particles from the new filter cartridge. The water may initially appear cloudy, but it should clear up quickly.

  13. Dispose of the old cartridge: Dispose of the old filter cartridge according to local regulations.

By following these steps, you can effectively change your filter cartridge and maintain a clean and healthy water supply.
