This practical method allows you to calculate the flow rate, usually expressed in gallons per minute (GPM) or liters per minute (LPM). It requires minimal equipment and can be done at any accessible outlet of the pipe system, such as a faucet or hose bib.

Here are the steps involved:

  1. Gather Equipment: You will need a container with known volume markings (like a bucket or jug) and a stopwatch or timer.

  2. Prepare the Outlet: Turn the water on to the desired pressure or fully open the tap from which you want to measure the flow.

  3. Collect Water: Place the container under the water flow. Start your timer immediately as you begin collecting water.

  4. Stop & Measure: Stop collecting water and simultaneously stop the timer once the container reaches a specific volume marking (e.g., 1 gallon or 5 liters) or after a set amount of time has passed (e.g., 30 seconds).

  5. Record Results: Note down the exact volume of water collected and the exact time it took to collect it.

  6. Calculate Flow Rate: Divide the total volume of water collected by the time it took to collect it. To get the rate in Gallons Per Minute (GPM), ensure your volume is in gallons and your time is in minutes.

    • Example Calculation based on reference: If you collected a certain number of gallons in a certain number of seconds, first convert seconds to minutes by dividing by 60. Then, as stated in the reference: "take the number of gallons you collected and divided by minutes. And there you have the flow."
