Is Water Blue or Wet?

Published in Water Properties 1 min read

Water is both slightly blue and wet. Wetness is a property of liquids, including water, while pure water has a slight blue tint.

The Color of Water

While small amounts of water appear colorless, larger volumes of pure water exhibit a faint blue color. This isn't due to the scattering of light like the sky's blue color (Rayleigh scattering). Instead, the blue hue arises from the selective absorption of red light by water molecules. This means water absorbs more red light than blue light, leaving more blue light to be observed. The deeper the water, the more pronounced the blue color becomes.

The Wetness of Water

Wetness is the ability of a liquid to adhere to a solid surface, which is due to surface tension. Water has a relatively high surface tension and the ability to spread across surfaces, resulting in the sensation of "wetness".

In summary, water possesses two distinct properties: a subtle blue color, especially noticeable in large quantities of pure water, and the characteristic of being wet.
