How do I control the pressure on my water pump?

Published in Water Pump Pressure 2 mins read

The pressure on your water pump in a residential setting is controlled by adjusting the pressure switch at the pressure tank. Here's how to manage it:

Understanding the Pressure Control System

The water pump system relies on a pressure tank and a pressure switch to maintain consistent water pressure throughout your home.

  • Pressure Tank: This tank stores water under pressure, provided by compressed air.

  • Pressure Switch: This switch monitors the water pressure in the tank and turns the pump on or off to maintain pressure within a set range.

Steps to Control Water Pump Pressure

Follow these steps to adjust the pressure effectively:

  1. Locate the Pressure Switch: Find the pressure switch, which is usually mounted on or near the pressure tank.

  2. Determine the Current Pressure Range: Identify the current pressure settings on the switch. For example, it might be set to turn on the pump at 40 PSI and turn it off at 60 PSI (40/60 switch).

  3. Adjust the Air Pressure in the Tank:

    • Turn off the pump at the breaker.
    • Drain the Tank: Completely drain the water from the pressure tank.
    • Check the Air Pressure: Use a tire pressure gauge to check the air pressure in the tank (Schrader valve is usually located on top of the tank).
    • Adjust the Air Pressure: The air pressure in the tank should be 2 PSI below the pump's cut-in pressure (the pressure at which the pump turns on). For example, if your switch range is from 40 to 60 PSI, you should set the tank pressure, with no water in it, at 38 PSI (according to reference information).
    • Use a bicycle pump or air compressor to adjust the air pressure.
  4. Refill the Tank and Test: Turn the pump back on, allowing the tank to fill. Monitor the pressure gauge to ensure the pump turns on and off at the desired pressures.

Example

Let's say you want your pump to turn on at 40 PSI and off at 60 PSI:

Component Setting
Pressure Switch 40/60 PSI
Air Pressure in Tank 38 PSI (2 PSI below the cut-in pressure)
