How to Distill Hard Water?

Published in Water Purification 2 mins read

Distilling hard water at home is possible using a simple stovetop method. Here's a breakdown:

Stovetop Distillation Method

This method utilizes basic kitchen equipment to create distilled water from hard water.

Materials Needed:

  • A large pot
  • A lid for the pot
  • A heat-safe bowl that can fit inside the pot without touching the bottom
  • Ice

Procedure:

  1. Set up: Place the heat-safe bowl inside the large pot.
  2. Add Hard Water: Pour hard water into the pot, being careful not to get any water in the bowl. The water level should be below the top of the bowl.
  3. Boil the Water:
    • Turn on your stove's burner to medium heat.
    • Let the water boil.
  4. Create Condensation:
    • Place the lid upside-down on the pot.
    • Fill the upside-down lid with ice.
    • The steam from the boiling water will hit the ice-cold lid, creating condensation.
  5. Collect Distilled Water: The condensation will drip from the lid into the bowl. This collected water is distilled water.
  6. Continue the Process: Continue adding ice to the lid as it melts and replenishing the hard water in the pot as needed, being careful not to let it boil dry.

Important Considerations:

  • Safety: Be cautious when handling boiling water and hot equipment. Use oven mitts or pot holders to prevent burns.
  • Purity: While this method effectively removes many impurities, it may not produce water of the same purity as laboratory-grade distillation.
  • Efficiency: This method is relatively slow and produces small batches of distilled water.
  • Bowl Stability: Ensure the bowl is stable inside the pot to prevent it from tipping over.
