How Do Solar Stills Work?

Solar stills operate on the principle of evaporation and condensation, replicating the natural processes that generate rainfall to purify water. Their function is remarkably simple yet effective.

A solar still primarily consists of two key components: a transparent cover and a pan of saline water. The fundamental process involves using solar energy to heat the water, causing it to evaporate, and then condensing the resulting water vapor into pure water.

Here's a breakdown of the process:

  • Solar Energy Trapping: A transparent cover (often made of glass or clear plastic) encloses a pan containing saline or impure water. This cover acts like a miniature greenhouse, allowing solar radiation to pass through and be absorbed by the dark-colored pan and the water itself. The transparent cover traps solar energy within the enclosure, significantly raising the temperature inside.
  • Evaporation: As the solar energy heats the saline water in the pan, the water temperature rises. When it reaches a sufficient temperature, the pure water molecules gain enough energy to turn into vapor, leaving impurities like salt, minerals, and contaminants behind in the pan. This process is evaporation.
  • Condensation: The water vapor rises and comes into contact with the cooler inner surface of the transparent cover. Since the cover is cooler than the vapor, the water vapor loses heat, cools down, and transforms back into liquid water droplets. This is the process of condensation.
  • Collection: These pure water droplets, now free of impurities, trickle down the slanted inner surface of the cover and are collected in a clean channel or trough, which then directs the distilled water into an external container.

In essence, solar stills use exactly the same processes which in nature generate rainfall, namely evaporation and condensation, to transform undrinkable water into safe, potable water.
