What is Resin Water Softener?

Published in Water Softeners 2 mins read

Water softener resin is the essential material within a water softener that performs the ion exchange process to remove hard water minerals like calcium and magnesium from your water.

How Resin Works in Water Softeners

Water softener resin consists of tiny, spherical beads, usually made of polystyrene, that are packed tightly within the water softener's tank. These beads are the key to the water softening process:

  • Ion Exchange: The resin beads are negatively charged. Because calcium and magnesium ions (the minerals that cause hard water) are positively charged, they are attracted to the resin beads.
  • Attracting Hard Water Minerals: As hard water flows through the resin bed, the calcium and magnesium ions "stick" to the resin beads, replacing them with sodium or potassium ions (depending on the type of salt used in the softener). Sodium and potassium do not cause hard water issues.
  • Softened Water: The water that exits the water softener is now "soft" because the hardness minerals have been removed.

Resin Regeneration

Over time, the resin beads become saturated with calcium and magnesium ions and lose their ability to soften water. This is when the regeneration process occurs:

  • Brine Solution: The water softener uses a concentrated salt (brine) solution to flush the resin bed.
  • Releasing Hardness Minerals: The high concentration of sodium or potassium ions in the brine solution forces the calcium and magnesium ions off the resin beads.
  • Flushing Away: The hard water minerals and excess brine solution are then flushed down the drain.
  • Recharged Resin: The resin beads are now "recharged" with sodium or potassium ions and ready to soften water again.

Types of Resin

While most water softener resin is made of polystyrene, there are different types depending on the specific application and desired performance.

Importance of Resin

Without resin, a water softener would be ineffective at removing hardness minerals. Resin is the workhorse of the system, ensuring that you have soft water for your home.
