- Clark's process: This involves adding lime to the water to precipitate out calcium and magnesium ions.
- Calgon's process: Uses sodium hexametaphosphate to prevent mineral scaling.
These methods are generally more complex and less frequently used in home settings.
4. Boiling (for Temporary Hardness Only)
Boiling only addresses temporary hardness, caused by bicarbonate minerals. Heating the water converts these bicarbonates into carbonates, which precipitate out of solution, leaving softer water. However, this method is ineffective for permanent hardness.
Example: Boiling kettle water can slightly reduce hardness, but it's not a comprehensive solution.
