How to store canned water?

Published in Water Storage 3 mins read

To store water effectively, you can use clean canning jars, following these steps:

Steps to Store Water in Canning Jars

Here's how to properly store water in canning jars, based on best practices:

  • Prepare the Jars:
    • Use clean mason-type quart or half-gallon jars. Ensure they are thoroughly washed and sterilized.
  • Fill with Water:
    • Fill the jars with potable water, leaving 1 inch of headspace at the top of the jar. This space is necessary to allow for expansion during the heating process.
  • Seal the Jars:
    • Attach two-piece metal canning lids to each jar. Make sure the lids are new and the bands are screwed on fingertip-tight.
  • Process in a Canner:
    • Fill a boiling water canner halfway with water and preheat the water to the appropriate temperature for processing. Lower the jars carefully into the canner, ensuring they are covered by at least 1 inch of water.
    • Process the jars according to standard canning procedures, which typically involves bringing the water to a full boil and then boiling the jars for a specified period (which varies based on altitude and jar size).
  • Cool Down:
    • Carefully remove the jars from the canner and allow them to cool at room temperature. You will usually hear a “pop” sound as each lid seals.
  • Check for Seal:
    • Once cooled, check that the lids are sealed by pressing down on the center of the lid. If the lid doesn't give or flex, the seal is good. Any jars without a proper seal should be reprocessed or refrigerated for immediate use.

Key Considerations

  • Water Source: Always use clean, potable water from a trusted source.
  • Jar Integrity: Inspect jars for any cracks or chips before use.
  • Headspace: Leave the specified headspace to ensure a proper seal during processing.
  • Proper Processing: Adhere to safe canning practices to prevent any issues.
  • Storage: After cooling, store sealed jars in a cool, dark place to preserve water quality.

Why Use Canning Jars

Using canning jars is a reliable way to store water for several reasons:

  • Airtight Seal: The canning process creates an airtight seal that prevents contamination.
  • Reusable: Jars are reusable, making them a sustainable option.
  • Durable: Properly sealed jars are sturdy and can be stored without fear of leakage.
