How Iron and Manganese are Removed

The manganese oxide coating on the greensand acts as an oxidant and a catalyst. As water flows through the filter bed containing dissolved iron and manganese, the manganese oxide facilitates a chemical change. Specifically, it oxidizes iron, manganese and iron in the water upon contact with the filter media. This oxidation process changes the dissolved forms of iron (Fe²⁺) and manganese (Mn²⁺) into insoluble solid particles (like Fe(OH)₃ and MnO₂).

Once converted into solid precipitates, these particles are physically trapped within the granular greensand filter bed, effectively removing them from the water as it passes through.

This process replenishes the manganese oxide coating's oxidative capacity, ensuring the filter continues to perform effectively in oxidizing and removing contaminants.
