How to Change a Water Turtle Tank

Published in Water Turtle Care 3 mins read

Changing your water turtle's tank involves a regular partial water change and occasional more thorough cleanings. Avoid complete water changes unless absolutely necessary, as this disrupts the beneficial bacteria crucial for water quality.

Partial Water Changes: The Regular Routine

The most common method is performing a partial water change (25-50%) once a week, or more frequently if needed. This prevents the buildup of harmful ammonia and nitrates.

  • Step 1: Remove a portion of the water. Use a gravel vacuum or a siphon to remove the dirty water, along with any waste at the bottom. Aim for 25-50% of the total water volume. A 5-gallon bucket is helpful for this process.
  • Step 2: Replace with dechlorinated water. Use water treated with a dechlorinator to remove chlorine and chloramine, which are harmful to turtles. You can also use some of the old tank water to help maintain beneficial bacteria levels. Ensure the new water is at the same temperature as the existing tank water.
  • Step 3: Monitor water parameters. Regularly test your water for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels to ensure they remain within safe ranges for your turtle. Adjust water change frequency based on test results.

Important Considerations: Never do a 90% water change unless absolutely necessary, like when moving the tank. Large water changes can disrupt the nitrogen cycle and harm beneficial bacteria.

Filter Maintenance & Deeper Cleanings

Regular filter maintenance is key to reducing the need for frequent water changes.

  • Filter Cleaning: Turn off your filter, remove the media, and rinse it thoroughly with dechlorinated water or old aquarium water. Replace any media that is no longer viable. Remember, these filters support beneficial bacteria that maintain good water quality.

Thorough tank cleanings should be done less often, only when visible dirt or algae build-up is observed. During a thorough cleaning:

  • Remove all decorations and thoroughly scrub them with a turtle-safe cleaner.
  • Clean the tank itself with a turtle-safe cleaner and rinse well.
  • Replace water with dechlorinated water, restarting the filter once clean.

Remember, even with regular cleaning, monitoring water parameters remains vital for turtle health.
