How to Use Dried Watercolor

Published in Watercolor Painting 2 mins read

To use dried watercolor paints, you need to re-wet them to activate the pigments.

Here's a breakdown of how to do it:

  1. Add Water: Apply a few drops of clean water to the surface of each dried watercolor pan or well. Let the water sit for a minute or two. This softens the paint and makes it usable. You can use a spray bottle, a dropper, or a clean brush dipped in water.

  2. Activate the Paint: Use a wet brush to gently swirl the water and dried paint together. Don’t scrub too hard. You want to lift the pigment, not damage the paint. Mix until you achieve the desired consistency. Add more water if needed to create a more transparent wash.

  3. Test the Color: Before applying the paint to your artwork, test the color on a piece of scrap watercolor paper. This allows you to see the true color and adjust the water-to-paint ratio as needed.

  4. Start Painting: Once you are satisfied with the color and consistency, you can begin painting.

Important Considerations:

  • Re-wetting: It's okay if your dried watercolor paints get hard. This is normal and doesn't mean they're ruined. They're designed to be re-wetted and used again and again.
  • Cleanliness: Keep your water and brushes clean to prevent contamination of your colors.
  • Storage: Store your watercolor palettes in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent the paints from cracking or fading.
