What is a Power Flash in a Storm?

Published in Weather Phenomena 2 mins read

A power flash in a storm is a burst of light resulting from electrical arcing from damaged electrical equipment, most commonly power lines.

Understanding Power Flashes

Power flashes are dramatic displays of light that often accompany severe weather events. These flashes aren't the same as lightning, although they can be mistaken for it. The key difference lies in the source: lightning originates from atmospheric electrical imbalances within storm clouds, whereas power flashes are man-made, originating from failures in the electrical grid.

Causes of Power Flashes

  • Strong Winds: The most common culprit is strong winds. Tropical cyclones, tornadoes, derechoes, and even strong thunderstorms can generate winds powerful enough to snap power lines or cause them to sway and come into contact.
  • Falling Trees and Debris: Winds often carry debris, including tree limbs, which can fall onto power lines, causing damage and arcing.
  • Downbursts: Intense downbursts can also bring power lines down.
  • Damaged Electrical Equipment: Severed or arcing power lines are the primary source of light during a power flash.

Differentiating Power Flashes from Lightning

While both involve bright flashes of light, several clues can help distinguish between a power flash and a lightning strike:

Feature Lightning Power Flash
Source Atmospheric electrical discharge Damaged electrical equipment (power lines)
Appearance Often branching, jagged lines of light More localized, sometimes sustained arc
Sound Thunder (often a loud, rolling boom) Sizzling, popping, or humming sound
Duration Typically a very brief flash Can be a short flash or a sustained arc
Accompanying Events Generally accompanied by thunder Often accompanied by power outages

Safety Precautions During a Power Flash

  • Stay Indoors: The safest place to be during a storm is indoors.
  • Avoid Contact with Water: Electricity and water are a dangerous combination.
  • Stay Away from Windows: Keep a safe distance from windows to avoid injury from flying debris.
  • Report Downed Power Lines: If you see downed power lines, report them to your local power company immediately.
  • Treat All Wires as Live: Never approach or touch downed power lines, as they could be energized.
