Why do married couples wear their rings on the left hand?

Published in Wedding Traditions 1 min read

Married couples in Western traditions typically wear their wedding rings on the left hand because the ancient Romans believed a vein, known as the vena amoris (vein of love), ran directly from the fourth finger of the left hand (the ring finger) to the heart.

This belief, though scientifically inaccurate, persisted for centuries and became a widely accepted symbol of love and commitment. The placement of the wedding ring on this specific finger was seen as a direct connection to the heart, the center of emotions and love. While modern science has debunked the existence of a unique vein only connecting the ring finger to the heart (all fingers have veins that eventually lead to the heart), the tradition remains a romantic and symbolic gesture. Other cultures have different traditions regarding which hand the ring should be worn on, but the left hand tradition is common in many Western societies.
