What causes face fat?

Published in Weight Management 1 min read

Face fat is primarily caused by weight gain. When we consume more calories than we burn, our bodies store excess energy as fat, and this can accumulate in the face. However, other factors can contribute to a puffy or round appearance, such as:

  • Water retention: This can occur due to various factors like hormonal changes, high sodium intake, or certain medical conditions, making the face appear swollen.
  • Genetics: Just like body fat distribution, the location of fat accumulation in the face can be influenced by genetics.
  • Bone structure: The underlying bone structure of the face can also affect its appearance. Some individuals naturally have a rounder face due to their bone structure.
  • Age: As we age, the fat pads in our face lose volume and shift downward, contributing to a less defined facial contour.

While there's no specific food that directly increases facial fat, a poor diet high in processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats can contribute to overall weight gain, including in the face.
