How Big Are Whale Nipples?

Published in Whale Biology 1 min read

Whale nipple size varies significantly depending on the whale species and their age.

The volume of a nipple from a 2.18-meter foetal blue whale was only 0.064 cc. In contrast, a 20.9-meter long blue whale (SH831) had a nipple with a volume of 46 cc. These nipples were shaped like a short, truncated cone.

It's important to note that whales are mammals, and all mammals possess nipples for lactation. However, whale nipples are relatively small and often retracted, making them difficult to spot. The size difference between the fetal whale nipple and the adult whale nipple highlights the growth and development throughout a whale's life.
