How to Use Window Film Application Solution

Published in Window Film Installation 3 mins read

Window film application solution, often a mixture of water and soap, is crucial for properly installing window film. It facilitates positioning and prevents air bubbles.

Steps for Using Window Film Application Solution:

Here's how to use window film application solution during window film installation:

  1. Prepare the Window: Thoroughly clean the window surface with a scraper and a lint-free cloth. Ensure all debris and residue are removed.

  2. Prepare the Film: Unroll the window film and cut it to the appropriate size, leaving a slight excess.

  3. Spray the Window: Generously spray the entire window surface with the application solution. This allows the film to float and be easily positioned.

  4. Remove the Liner: Carefully peel off the protective liner from the window film. As you peel, spray the adhesive side of the film with the application solution. This prevents the adhesive from sticking to itself and attracting dust.

  5. Apply the Film: Carefully place the film onto the sprayed window surface. The solution should allow you to slide the film around for precise positioning.

  6. Position the Film: Adjust the film to the desired location on the window.

  7. Squeegee Out the Solution: Using a squeegee, start from the center and work your way outwards, removing the application solution from between the film and the glass. Overlap each squeegee stroke.

  8. Final Smoothing: Use your hands or a soft cloth to smooth out any remaining air bubbles or imperfections. Re-spray the outside surface to help with this process, if needed. If larger air bubbles remain after squeegeeing, gently push them to the edge of the film with your fingers.

  9. Trim Excess Film: Once the film is properly positioned and most of the solution is removed, trim any excess film around the edges with a sharp utility knife.

  10. Final Wipe Down: Wipe down the edges of the film and the surrounding window area with a clean, lint-free cloth.

Important Considerations:

  • Solution Mixture: Use a pre-made window film application solution or create your own by mixing a few drops of mild dish soap (like baby shampoo) with a spray bottle of water. Too much soap can leave residue.
  • Cleanliness: Ensure your hands, tools, and work area are clean to prevent contamination and imperfections in the film application.
  • Squeegee Technique: Use firm, even pressure when squeegeeing to effectively remove the solution and ensure proper adhesion.
  • Patience: Take your time and be patient during the installation process for best results.
  • Air Bubbles: Address any air bubbles promptly during the squeegeeing process. Small imperfections may disappear within a few days as the remaining solution evaporates.
