How to Measure Double Glazing Thickness?

Published in Window Glazing Measurement 2 mins read

When double glazing is already installed in a window, the best way to measure its thickness is by using the window frame as a guide.

Measuring Installed Double Glazing

Measuring glass that is already installed into a window can be a bit tricky. Your best option, though, is to measure how thick the frame is and then measure the thickness of the frame on the inside and outside of the pane of glass. You can then subtract those measurements from the thickness of the frame.

Here's a simple breakdown of this method:

  1. Measure the total thickness of the window frame: Take a measurement from the outer edge of the frame on the exterior to the inner edge of the frame on the interior.
  2. Measure the thickness of the frame on the inside of the glass: This is the distance from the surface of the glass pane on the inside to the inner edge of the frame.
  3. Measure the thickness of the frame on the outside of the glass: This is the distance from the surface of the glass pane on the outside to the outer edge of the frame.
  4. Subtract the inside and outside frame measurements from the total frame thickness: The remaining measurement is the approximate thickness of the double glazing unit itself.

This method provides a practical way to determine the thickness of your double glazing without needing to remove the unit from its frame.
