How to Do Side-by-Side Windows

Published in Window Management 2 mins read

Putting windows side-by-side on your screen is a simple way to multitask, allowing you to view and work with two applications simultaneously.

Using the Drag-and-Snap Method

One of the most common and straightforward ways to arrange windows side-by-side in Windows, as hinted by the provided reference, involves dragging the window to the edge of your screen. This feature, known as Snap Assist in recent Windows versions like Windows 10, automatically resizes and positions the window to fill half the screen.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps to place two windows side-by-side using your mouse:

  1. Open the Windows: Ensure you have at least two windows open that you want to view side-by-side.
  2. Select the First Window: Click on the title bar (the top section) of the first window you want to position.
  3. Drag the Window: Grab the window by its title bar. As described in the reference, you can "sort of [grab] the taskbar right at the top click there and just with my left mouse key press down click and hold and just start dragging. And you'll see it will move around."
  4. Snap to Edge: While still holding the left mouse button, drag the window all the way to either the left or right edge of your screen. As your mouse cursor touches the screen edge, you will see an outline appear showing where the window will snap.
  5. Release and Snap: Release the mouse button. The window will automatically resize to fill exactly half of your screen.
  6. Choose the Second Window: On the remaining empty half of your screen, Windows will often display small preview thumbnails of your other open windows. Click on the window you want to place on the second side.
  7. Complete the Arrangement: The second window will automatically snap into place on the other half of the screen, giving you a side-by-side view of both applications.

This manual dragging method is intuitive and effective for quickly arranging windows to enhance productivity.
