How to Remove Window Pins

Published in Window Repair 2 mins read

To remove window pins, often referred to as rivets on window louvres, you can use different methods depending on whether you have access to power tools.

Here's a breakdown of how to tackle the job:

Methods for Removing Window Pins (Rivets)

The process of removing window pins largely depends on the tools you have available. The goal is typically to disable or remove the rivet securing the component (like a louvre) in place.

Using Power Tools

If you have access to power tools, the removal process is generally quicker and more efficient.

  • Drilling: You can drill out the rivets. Use a drill bit slightly larger than the hole in the center of the rivet head. Drill slowly and steadily through the head until it separates from the rivet body.
  • Grinding: Alternatively, you can grind off the rivets with an angle grinder. Carefully grind down the head of the rivet until it is flat with the surface or completely removed. Always use appropriate safety gear, including eye protection, when using grinders.

Without Power Tools

If power tools are not an option, you can still remove the rivets with basic hand tools:

  • Hammer and Screwdriver: You can hit it with a flathead screwdriver and hammer directly onto the rivet head. The aim is to bend or deform the rivet enough so that the component it secures (like the louvres) can be manipulated or removed. Continue hitting until the rivets are bent enough to get the louvres off. This method requires persistent effort and may not leave the surrounding material undamaged.

Choose the method that best suits your tools and the specific type of window pin or rivet you are dealing with. Always prioritize safety and use protective gear.
