How do you use window tint film?

Published in Window Tinting 3 mins read

Window tint film is applied by adhering it to a wet glass surface after removing its protective liner and spraying both the glass and the adhesive side of the film with a slip solution.

Applying window tint involves a few key steps to ensure a smooth, bubble-free finish. Here's a breakdown of the process:

  1. Preparation is Key: Clean the glass thoroughly. Remove any dirt, debris, or old adhesive. Use a scraper and appropriate cleaning solution. This step is crucial for adhesion.

  2. Cut the Film: Cut the window tint film slightly larger than the window dimensions. This allows for trimming after application.

  3. Apply Slip Solution: Generously spray the inside of the window with a slip solution (a mixture of water and a small amount of soap, often baby shampoo). The solution allows the film to be positioned correctly.

  4. Separate the Liner: Carefully peel the protective liner from the tint film. As you peel, spray the adhesive side of the film with the slip solution. Do not touch the adhesive. The more solution, the better the chance of a smooth application.

  5. Apply the Film: Place the adhesive side of the film onto the wet window. The slip solution will allow you to move and adjust the film's position.

  6. Squeegee: Use a squeegee to remove the slip solution and air bubbles from between the film and the glass. Start from the center and work your way outwards. Overlap each pass of the squeegee.

  7. Trim Excess Film: Use a sharp blade to trim the excess film around the edges of the window.

  8. Final Squeegee: Perform a final squeegee to ensure all air and water are removed. Pay special attention to the edges.

  9. Curing Time: Allow the film to cure completely. This may take a few days, depending on the temperature and humidity. Avoid rolling down the window during this period.

Important Considerations:

  • Slip Solution: Using enough slip solution is vital. It allows the film to slide and be properly positioned. Too little solution will result in bubbles and creases.
  • Cleanliness: A clean glass surface is essential for proper adhesion.
  • Patience: Applying window tint can be tricky. Take your time and be patient.
  • Tools: Use the correct tools, including a sharp blade, squeegee, and spray bottle.
