How to Turn On Mouse Keys Without a Mouse

Published in Windows Accessibility 3 mins read

To turn on Mouse Keys without a mouse, you can navigate through the Windows Control Panel using only your keyboard. This process involves using keys like Tab, arrow keys, Enter, and the Spacebar to select options and activate settings.

Step-by-Step Guide Using Only Your Keyboard

You can follow the path described in the reference – accessing Control Panel, then Ease of Access, then Ease of Access Center, and finally the mouse settings – all through keyboard navigation.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Open the Run dialog: Press the Windows key + R simultaneously on your keyboard.
  2. Open Control Panel: Type control into the Run dialog box and press Enter. This will open the Control Panel window.
  3. Navigate to Ease of Access: Use the Tab key to move focus between sections and links in the Control Panel. Use the arrow keys to navigate within a view if needed. Once "Ease of Access" is highlighted or focused, press Enter.
  4. Open Ease of Access Center: Inside the Ease of Access window, use the Tab key and arrow keys to find and highlight "Ease of Access Center". Press Enter.
  5. Make the mouse easier to use: In the Ease of Access Center, use the Tab key and arrow keys to find and highlight the link or icon for "Make the mouse easier to use". Press Enter.
  6. Turn on Mouse Keys: On the "Make the mouse easier to use" screen, use the Tab key to cycle through the options until the focus lands on the check box labeled "Turn on Mouse Keys".
  7. Select the checkbox: Press the Spacebar to select (check) the "Turn on Mouse Keys" check box.
  8. Apply the changes: Use the Tab key to move the focus to the Apply or OK button located at the bottom of the window. Press Enter to confirm and activate Mouse Keys.

Once Mouse Keys is enabled, you can use the numeric keypad on your keyboard to control the mouse pointer. The 5 key clicks, 8, 2, 4, 6 move the pointer up, down, left, and right, respectively, and other number keys move diagonally.

By following these steps and utilizing basic keyboard navigation commands, you can successfully enable Mouse Keys without needing a physical mouse.
