How do I delete temporary Windows installation files?

Published in Windows Cleanup 2 mins read

You can delete temporary Windows installation files through the Windows Settings app. Here's how:

  1. Open Settings: Press the Windows key on your keyboard and click the Settings icon (usually a gear icon). Alternatively, search for "Settings" in the Windows search bar.

  2. Navigate to System: In the Settings window, click on System.

  3. Select Storage: In the left-hand menu, click on Storage.

  4. Temporary Files: Under the section showing your hard drive information, locate and click on Temporary files. Windows will scan your system for temporary files.

  5. Choose Files to Remove: A list of temporary files will appear. Make sure to check the box next to "Previous version of Windows" if you want to remove old installation files. You may also see other options like "Temporary Internet Files," "Delivery Optimization Files," and others. Select the checkboxes for all the file types you want to delete. Be careful not to delete files you might need.

  6. Remove Files: Click the "Remove files" button. Windows will then delete the selected temporary installation files and other chosen temporary files.

Important Considerations:

  • Deleting the "Previous version of Windows" files will remove the ability to easily revert to your previous Windows version. Make sure you are happy with your current version before deleting these files.

  • The "Temporary files" section might include other types of files besides Windows installation files. Review the list carefully before deleting anything.

  • After deleting the files, you may need to restart your computer for the changes to fully take effect.
