How do I turn off the software keyboard in Windows 10?

Published in Windows Keyboard 2 mins read

You can turn off the software keyboard in Windows 10 primarily through the Settings app or by disabling a related service. Here's how:

Method 1: Through Settings

This is the most common and straightforward method.

  1. Open Settings: Click the Start button, then click the gear icon to open the Settings app. Alternatively, press the Windows key + I.
  2. Navigate to Ease of Access: In the Settings app, click on "Ease of Access."
  3. Select Keyboard: In the left-hand menu, select "Keyboard."
  4. Toggle Off the On-Screen Keyboard: Under the "Use the On-Screen Keyboard" section, toggle the switch to the "Off" position. This will prevent the on-screen keyboard from appearing.

Method 2: Disabling the Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service

This method completely disables the service that manages the touch keyboard. Use this if you never want the keyboard to appear automatically. Note that disabling this service may affect other touch-related features.

  1. Open the Services App: Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box. Type services.msc and press Enter.
  2. Find the Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service: Scroll down the list of services until you find "Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service".
  3. Open Properties: Right-click on "Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service" and select "Properties".
  4. Change Startup Type: In the Properties window, go to the "General" tab. Find the "Startup type" dropdown menu.
  5. Disable the Service: Choose "Disabled" from the dropdown menu.
  6. Stop the Service (If Running): If the "Service status" says "Running", click the "Stop" button.
  7. Apply and OK: Click "Apply" and then "OK" to save the changes.

Important Considerations:

  • If you are using a tablet or a 2-in-1 device, disabling the Touch Keyboard service may prevent the touch keyboard from appearing even when you detach the physical keyboard.
