How Do I Remove the Administrator Password in Windows 11?

Published in Windows Security 3 mins read

Removing the administrator password in Windows 11 is generally not recommended for security reasons. However, if you understand the risks and still wish to proceed, here's how you might attempt to do so, depending on what you're actually trying to achieve (i.e., disable password login on startup or completely remove an administrator account's password):

1. Disabling Password Login on Startup (For a Single User Account):

This approach doesn't remove the password itself, but rather disables the requirement to enter it upon startup. This only works if you're only logging into one user account.

  1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type netplwiz or control userpasswords2 and press Enter.
  3. In the User Accounts window, uncheck the box next to "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer".
  4. Click Apply.
  5. A new window will appear asking for the username and password of the account you want to automatically log in. Enter your current username and password, then re-enter the password to confirm.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click OK again to save the changes and close the User Accounts window.

The next time you start your computer, it should automatically log into the specified account without prompting for a password. Note that you still have a password on the account; you've just bypassed the login screen.

2. Removing the Password Directly from an Administrator Account:

This method is more direct, but may not be possible depending on your specific Windows 11 configuration and account type (e.g., Microsoft account vs. local account).

Important: You need to be logged in as an administrator to make changes to other administrator accounts. Furthermore, removing the password from the currently logged in administrator account while using that account might not be allowed by Windows.

  • If Using a Microsoft Account: Microsoft accounts are primarily designed to use passwords. Removing the password is not a direct option. However, you might be able to switch to a local account (see below) and then remove the password. This is generally not recommended.

  • If Using a Local Account:

    1. Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings app.
    2. Click on Accounts.
    3. Click on Sign-in options.
    4. Under "Ways to sign in", you might see an option for "Password". If you do, click on "Change" and follow the prompts. If prompted for the current password, enter it. When prompted for a new password, leave the fields blank to remove the password completely. Note: This option might not always be available.

3. Risks of Removing the Administrator Password:

  • Security Vulnerability: Removing the administrator password makes your system incredibly vulnerable to unauthorized access, malware, and other security threats. Anyone with physical access to your computer can access all your files and settings.
  • Loss of Privacy: Your personal data becomes easily accessible to others.
  • Malware Infections: Malware can easily install itself and gain full control of your system.

Warning: Consider the security implications before removing the administrator password. It is highly recommended to keep a strong password for your administrator account.
