How Do I Add a Dotted Line for a Table of Contents in Word?

Published in Word Table of Contents 3 mins read

To add a dotted line (also known as a dot leader) between each entry and its page number in a Microsoft Word table of contents, you need to modify the Table of Contents settings through its dialog box.

Adding a dotted line helps guide the reader's eye from the text entry to its corresponding page number, improving readability and navigation within your document.

Steps to Add a Dotted Line to Your Word TOC

You can easily add a dotted line (dot leader) when inserting or modifying your table of contents using the built-in Word features.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Access the Table of Contents Settings:

    • If you are inserting a new table of contents, go to the References tab, click Table of Contents, and then select Custom Table of Contents....
    • If you already have a table of contents, click anywhere within the existing TOC. Then, go to the References tab, click Table of Contents, and select Custom Table of Contents.... Word will ask if you want to replace the selected table of contents; click Yes.
  2. Modify the Tab Leader:

    • In the Table of Contents dialog box that appears, you will see several options for formatting.
    • Locate the Tab leader dropdown list.
    • Click the Tab leader list, and then click the dotted line (it usually looks like a series of dots, like .....).
    • Note: You can also choose other options like a solid line (____) or a dash leader (----).
  3. Preview Your Changes:

    • As you make changes in the dialog box, you can see how they will look in the Print Preview and Web Preview areas within the same dialog box. This allows you to confirm that the dotted line is appearing as expected.
  4. Apply the Changes:

    • Click OK in the Table of Contents dialog box.
    • If you were modifying an existing TOC, confirm that you want to replace it when prompted.

Your table of contents will now display a dotted line connecting each heading entry to its corresponding page number.

Why Use a Dot Leader?

  • Improved Readability: Dotted lines make it easier for the reader's eye to follow from the heading on the left to the page number on the right, especially in longer documents.
  • Professional Appearance: It's a standard formatting convention for tables of contents in formal documents, books, and reports.

By following these simple steps, you can ensure your table of contents is both functional and aesthetically pleasing with the addition of a dotted line.
