Converting a Local Zoom Recording Later

Published in Zoom Recording Conversion 2 mins read

You can convert a local Zoom recording later if it didn't convert automatically after your meeting ended. This process transforms the raw recording data into standard video and audio files that can be played or edited.

If your local Zoom recording files (.zoom format) didn't process immediately after your meeting concluded, you can manually initiate the conversion from the Zoom desktop client. This is often necessary if you closed the Zoom application before the conversion finished.

Here are the steps to convert your local recording later:

  1. Open the Zoom desktop client on your computer.
  2. Navigate to the Recorded tab. You can usually find this option in the main window or navigation menu.
  3. From the list of recordings, select the meeting topic with the local recording that you need to convert.
  4. Click Convert.

Zoom will then begin processing the raw recording files into playable formats (typically .mp4 for video and .m4a for audio). Once completed, the converted files will be stored in the designated Zoom recording folder on your computer.

Why would you need to convert later?

  • The conversion process was interrupted (e.g., Zoom was closed).
  • Your computer shut down or went to sleep during the post-meeting conversion.
  • You chose to convert the recording at a later time.

It's important to note that "changing" a recording could also mean editing its content (like trimming parts, adding text, etc.). The process described above is specifically for converting the raw local recording files into a usable format. For actual video editing, you would typically use external video editing software after the recording has been converted and saved to your computer.
